If you have decided that you want to set up your own business and work from home there are a number of things that you will need to consider beforehand. There are many types of work that you can do from home and if you have thought of a potential business idea then here are some questions that you can ask yourself to see if the business is viable. This may dictate whether you set up for yourself or still work from home by for someone else. Here are 4 Factors to Consider Before Working From Home.

#1  Do you have the choice of when and where you work?

Many people want to work from home to have that flexibility in their lives.

Does the business you are considering need you to be there Mon-Fri 9-5 or can you pick and choose when the work is done? Think about the lifestyle you are looking for and consider whether this is achievable.

#2 Would you be able to continue in your day job and work from home in the evening?

This is an important point as you need to determine if it is something you can do in the evenings, to begin with. Unless you are in the position of not requiring money to support yourself for a period of time, then it is more than likely you will have to build gradually and do it in your spare time.

Is it a job that you can do outside of normal office hours? Also, would there be a conflict if your current employer discovered you were working from home for yourself or someone else? Check your current employment contract to see if they forbid this.

3. Does the business require investment and how much?

A very important point and you should sit down and work out every detail of the business to try and calculate costs. Every home based business will be different but no matter which business you do try to consider everything and over compensate on how much you think it could cost.

For example, if you are working from home on a computer as a virtual assistant, your costs will be very low, however if your business idea is to do cake decorating, home tutoring or even child care then there are lots of things to consider such as tools for the job, potential training courses and relevant insurance cover. Plan, plan and plan again as you don’t want to overlook something at the beginning that could put your business in jeopardy before your start.

4. Choose something you can be passionate about

A very important point this one. If you are passionate about a subject you will find it easier to motivate yourself on those down days (which you will have), and you will also feel comfortable with the subject as you will probably know a lot about it already.

You will also have a good idea already as to what could make the business work.
